“Working in retail is a starter job.” “It’s what you do before a real career.” “Anyone can get that job.” How many times have you heard that? A lot, right? Yeah, people who have never worked retail sure do have a lot of opinions about what it’s like to work retail. Sometimes, executives at the corporate offices don’t even really know what it’s like to run a brick-and-mortar location. Let me share this with you. I did a quick Google search for a store manager job description. Here it is. Responsibilities: ‣ Recruiting, training, supervising, and reviewing staff (still going) ‣ Dealing with customer queries and complaints (there’s more…) ‣ Ensuring compliance with health and safety legislation And skills? Enthusiasm (yep) Verbal communication skills (that’s right) Resourcefulness Being a store leader is like handling ten jobs at once. You have to get good at everything because you’re it. You only see your boss once a month – maybe. Communication could be sporadic. Retail leaders have to rely on themselves and their leadership teams to do pretty much everything. That is why, my friend, everyone should work retail at some point in their lives. Working on a sales floor will give you skills to take to any other profession, even if it’s not in a leadership position. Learning how to help different people with unique situations will make you shine in any career and give you an edge over someone without the experience. Even if you only work in retail for a year, you’ll be ahead of anyone who didn’t. Seriously. I could not have become a solo entrepreneur without my retail background. No way. If you work in retail, take a moment to reflect on all you do. You’re an entrepreneur in your own right. You run a business and lead a team. You can do anything. A-NY-THING.
