Retail Renegades

Navigating & thriving in Retail Leadership

(always people-first)

Happy New Year, Retail Leaders!

After the holidays, the retail grind does not let up.

The markdowns.
The inventory.
The returns.

It’s gonna be okay. And I got you.

Let’s get into another edition.

Welcome to Retail Renegades.

In every issue, I tear into 1 of the 10 biggest problems all retail leaders face:

  • Delegation
  • Priority order
  • Building culture
  • Self-confidence
  • Speaking up
  • Time management
  • Actionable empathy
  • Dealing with an overbearing boss
  • Clear & consistent communication
  • Streamlining processes – working smarter & saving time.

(If you want to smash all 10 of these AND master the fundamentals of running a kick-ass store, I’d love to have you in The Break Room.)

Dealing with an overbearing boss.

Should you quit?

This week, I want to help you FURTHER YOUR CAREER.

One of the questions I get most often is:

“My boss sucks, but at least I know what I’m dealing with. Should I quit? It could be worse someplace else.”

Let’s get into it.

Reflect on these aspects of your job and begin looking ahead.

1. Do you want to move up where you are?

It’s okay if the answer is NO. However, you don’t want to dread going in every day. Going to work shouldn’t feel like a total drag. Your boss could suck, but how much interaction do you have with them? If it’s minimal, you could stick it out.

If you want to move up and your boss keeps brushing you off or making excuses, freshen up your resume.

2. You’re allowed to interview

You’re allowed to interview. You’re allowed to make new connections. Go on, meet new people.

I’ve gone on so many interviews that didn’t work out, but I was always glad I went.

I even flew to San Francisco on a rainy day, bombed a three-hour interview, and flew home. It was still worth it.

Get out there.

3. Yes, it could be worse somewhere else. But IT COULD BE BETTER.

If it’s bad, it will be bad in a different way. None of my jobs were bad in the same way – there was always a slight difference. That makes changing jobs worth it, even though it sounds slightly bonkers.

When it’s better, it’s SO MUCH BETTER.

(Okay, I’ll stop yelling at you.)

I once quit a toxic job with no job lined up. It was super scary, but I landed somewhere great. Somewhere, I wouldn’t have ended up if I’d kept searching while working.

You don’t need to quit without something lined up – just be open to everything.

4. You deserve time off

I recently got a message from someone who is scheduled all the time because she is one of the “dependable ones.”

Ugh.

If you are not rewarded for your hard work, look elsewhere. A great work ethic should not be rewarded with only more work. You deserve a break and a breather.

Remember that.

5. Great bosses exist

Great bosses are out there. They’re hard to find, but they are doing great work. They care about you. They’ll listen to you and even give you days off.

They’ll see you as a human and a partner, not just an employee.

Start interviewing again and see what’s out there. You may meet one of these fantastic people.
