Retail Renegades Vol. 5 – Small Wins Lead to Bigger Wins

Retail Renegades

People-First Leadership

I have something totally embarrassing to admit.

I’ve spent my whole adult life putting work first. I put it before everything. I put it before eating. I know that sounds wild, but I would.

When I ran retail stores, I’d go to a coffee shop on my way to work and order a coffee and a pastry. I’d survive on that for four or five hours until I ate lunch.

After I left the retail floor and went to work for myself, I realized I could work at all.the.time. Hooray! I’d make coffee at home and immediately sit at my computer in my pajamas for at least an hour. Then, I’d walk the dog, come back, and return to work. Noon would roll around, and I’d be like,

Oh. I need to eat.

It’s a terrible habit, and I’m trying to unlearn it.

This morning, I had errands to run, and I — wait, are you ready? I made breakfast before leaving the house—a real breakfast with protein, vegetables, and everything.

It’s a baby step. It’s a small win. I’ll take it.

It’s super hard to rewire your brain, but it’s worth it when your health is at stake. Take the small wins. They lead to bigger wins.

The Voice of the Frontline

I’m going to be honest: I typically write The Voice of the Frontline newsletter the day before it publishes. I do this because I have other work, and if anything pops up in retail news I want to address, I can.

This week, I didn’t have anything. I didn’t have anything planned, and nothing in the news caught my eye, so I just sat there with my computer. I reflected on the last week and what I’d seen coming my way.

Struggle and burnout were what came up.

So many messages come my way each week about how retail leaders struggle. Payroll is getting cut. People are working twelve-hour days. District leaders are working on their laptops in bed late at night, sending waste-of-time emails that no one reads.

I thought back. It wasn’t long ago that I was right there – running around a sales floor with sweat rolling down my back because I was the only one on the floor. So, that’s what I wrote about.

The article resonated. My LinkedIn post has 26K views, and the article has 2K in 24 hours (that’s a lot for a Substack post).

I’m not surprised, but I am glad so many people read it and felt less alone.

You can read it here.

Retail Leaders Already Do it All. Stop Asking Them to Do More With Less.

I’m serious.

Subscribe to The Voice of the Frontline so you don’t miss a thing.

VoTF will be the only newsletter I publish weekly, so what are you waiting for? Get in here.

Thanks for being a part of this Retail Renegade community. I have so much planned for this newsletter and there are not enough hours in the day. So, thank you for staying tuned.

Stay rad,

Kit

Connect with Me on Instagram

I’m back on IG. I created a business account forever ago and left it to collect internet dust.

I revived my account because most of my former sales associates hang out there, and I want to stay connected. Why not reach more renegades while I’m at it?

And on TikTok

If I hit 1,000 followers, I can add a website to my profile without creating a business account, so get in here.

I don’t make the rules, people.

Also, I love TikTok. I can’t wait to create more content here.

Got Your Guide?

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Praise for The Retail Leader’s Field Guide.

“This is a fantastic book for someone starting out in retail management. I felt like I was thrown to wolves when I got promoted ages ago. Having a book like this would have been such a helpful guide. Even for someone with experience, this still an excellent read. I thoroughly enjoyed the clear and concise writing style. Highly recommend!”
